SwaddleDesigns® recently introduced the Swaddle Sack as the perfect solution for babies who prefer to sleep with arms up and to have access to their hands, and the safer option for older babies to bridge the gap from swaddling to wearable blankets.
The AAP recommends parents place a baby on its back to sleep for the first year of baby’s life. While the milestone for rolling over usually occurs around four months, some babies are able to rollover at three months, and in turn, the AAP recommends parents stop swaddling when baby can rollover, shows signs of trying to roll over, or when baby is 3 months old.
Today, when parents stop swaddling, the baby is often placed into a wearable blanket for sleep. Many parents have struggled with the recommendation to stop swaddling at 3 months, because their baby doesn’t sleep well without the support of a swaddle. If baby does not sleep well, then parents are more likely to try unsafe sleep practices which increases the risk of SIDS and suffocation.
Introducing the Swaddle Sac— the missing link in the safe sleep care pathway. The Swaddle Sack bridges the gap between swaddling with arms fully restrained and the sleeping sack with no arm support. The Swaddle Sack is a “swaddle” and a “sack” with a snug, arms-up design with light suppression of the Moro (startle) reflex, while providing some arm movement, and uniquely shaped sleeves with foldover mitten cuffs.
- The Swaddle Sack design is snug which helps baby feel supported and secure, and features a hip healthy design that allows hips and knees to flex.
- The Swaddle Sack design features unique, snug, arms up sleeves with foldover mitten cuffs that may be worn open or closed and allow baby to self-soothe.
- The Swaddle Sack design allows baby to use her arms to lift her upper body and reposition her head, if baby rolls from back to stomach.
Parents, caregivers, day care workers, nurses, and doctors all worry about baby rolling over with his or her arms restrained by a swaddle. When baby is ready to roll over, but baby is not sleeping well in a sleeping sack, the Swaddle Sack is the perfect solution. The Swaddle Sack is safer than products that fully restrain baby’s arms. With the Swaddle Sack, if baby rolls from back to stomach, then baby’s arms will be available to push up, so baby can move and reposition his or her head.
The Swaddle Sack arms up design allows baby to sleep in a natural position and self-soothe for comfort. Babies who are able to self-soothe are calmer and sleep better. The foldover mitten cuffs may be worn open, so baby can suck on fingers, or the foldover mitten cuffs can be closed to cover hands if the caregiver is concerned about facial scratches, and baby can still access his or her hands for self-comfort. The breastfeeding advocacy community and infant researchers support baby having access to hands which is important when establishing breastfeeding and for early baby cues.
SwaddleDesigns Swaddle Sack is made from 100% stretchy soft premium cotton knit, and features a hip healthy design that allows hips and knees to flex while providing swaddle snugness to reassure and comfort baby.
It’s convertible and easy to use. Simply place baby in the sack and zip up! The Swaddle Sack features a 2-way zipper so diaper changes are easy, just unzip from the bottom to access the diaper.
